The ACA covers environmental health concerns such as clean air, water, adequate shelter and healthy foods.

The effects of physical environmental conditions—both natural and man-made—on a person’s health, physical development and wellness are surpassed only by his or her behavior and lifestyle. Almost all environmental determinants that compromise one’s health are preventable. The federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) not only reforms the nation’s health insurance infrastructure and expands coverage, but also contains recommendations to address environmental factors affecting health, including clean air and water; healthy, safe communities; sustainable food systems; and access to affordable and healthy foods and drinkable water.
