Boss Ladies
Eliza Lucas Pinkney is the first woman recorded in the United States as a business owner: She took over three family-owned plantations in South Carolina in 1739. It would be 249 years before Congress passed the 1988 Women’s Business Ownership Act, which granted women the right to take out business loans in their own name. Many states still required a male cosigner. Women now own an estimated 13 million businesses, or 42% of U.S. companies. Washington, D.C., has the highest rate of female business ownership, with 4,753 per 100,000 residents.
