Road to Reform: State Approaches to Addressing Driver’s License Suspensions
Efforts are underway in at least half the states to assist individuals who have had their licenses suspended due to not paying fines or fees or for failing to appear in court. One approach used by states to address suspensions is to limit the suspensions solely to violations related to dangerous driving.
Enhancing Law Enforcement Safety and Well-being
States have increasingly enacted legislation to enhance officer safety and well-being. New protections for officers include peer counseling and support networks, mental health screenings, education and workers' compensation benefits.

Automatic and/or Automated Criminal Record Clearing
Every state has a procedure that allows some people with criminal records to clear them by petitioning a judge or court. NCSL’s new database has information on states that have an automatic record clearing process in statute, including general eligibility requirements and the process by which the automatic record clearing process occurs.
New Pretrial Legislation Tracking
NCSL’s Pretrial Legislation Database has preliminary 2024 enactments now available with more newly enacted bills being added regularly.
