Legislative races in 46 states will be conducted in November 2022. These include races in 88 of the nation's 99 legislative chambers. The table below indicates which states and chambers are holding legislative elections, and how many seats are up for reelection this year. No legislative races will be held in Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey or Virginia because they hold state elections in odd-numbered years.
A total of 6,279 seats are up for regularly scheduled elections, representing 85 percent of the nation's soon-to-be 7,386 legislative seats (Wyoming's legislature will expand by three seats in 2023). This page does not include any special elections that may be held in conjunction with the general election or at other times throughout 2022.
The table also provides the size of each legislative chamber and length of terms. Terms in all chambers are either two or four years; no state lawmakers have six-year terms.
