Staff Snapshots | Perry John P. Tenorio

April 12, 2022

Hometown: Saipan, U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands

Role: Director, Legislative Bureau, Northern Marianas Commonwealth Legislature

Years of legislative service: Five

What inspires him: “Understanding that we can coexist despite our differences.”

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

I worked in the travel industry for approximately 26 years in various capacities at the Marianas Visitors Authority—the commonwealth’s tourism office. As the sole economic driver for the commonwealth, the tourism industry required that I be away from my family. I decided that I wanted a new challenge, and I found that at the Legislature. The fact that it allowed me to spend more quality time with my family was a bonus.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

Ensuring that the Legislative Bureau continues to provide the quality service expected by the legislative members. We do this even though we are very lean in staffing, a challenge compounded exponentially by the pandemic.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

You can’t please everyone.

What’s one thing you love about your territory?

Located in the Western Pacific, the Northern Marianas Islands have an average temperature of 81 degrees Fahrenheit. We can enjoy the many activities available year-round.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

Two years ago, I decided to live a healthier lifestyle. Through literature and podcasts, I try to absorb as much information as possible on the ketogenic lifestyle and “functional” medicine. Health is wealth!

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
