Staff Snapshots | Molly McAllister

May 5, 2022

Hometown: West Hartford, Conn.

Role: Training and staff development coordinator, Connecticut General Assembly

NCSL connection: McAllister contributed to the State Legislatures News story Expert Tips for Sustaining Your Energy in a New Session.”

Years of legislative service: Nine

The best advice she’s received: “‘What we practice grows stronger.’ I don’t know who coined it, but it centers my attention and energy every time. What am I practicing? Is that the thing I want to grow stronger?”

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

Ten years ago, I had no idea this kind of opportunity existed. When I found it, everything fell into place. For a learning and development professional, the legislature provides an ideal environment. Staff want to learn and grow, and when they are hard at work during the session, it’s a good opportunity for me to research and create more content for them. It’s a win-win and I’m grateful for it every day.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

There are occasions when a staff member will come back to me several months—or even several years—after a training class and tell me that something we discussed still has an impact on them. That’s when I know my work has made a difference, and I’m very proud of those moments. I guess you could say I’m proud of my ability to make an impact.

Who or what inspires you?

The staff at the General Assembly inspire me daily. This building is filled with passionate and hardworking individuals. They give so much of themselves and care deeply about what they are doing. When they take time out to attend a learning and development event, I want to make sure it is worth their time and that they leave feeling energized. They inspire me to always do my best.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

I love the definitive four seasons and how Connecticut embraces each one. From the apple picking and corn mazes in the fall to the festivals and parades in the summer. I even get a kick out of the bread-and-milk-buying frenzy before a winter snowstorm. We celebrate each season with gusto.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I always have a book on my nightstand and an audiobook in my ear. Right now, I’m considering a trifecta! I am watching Brené Brown’s “Atlas of the Heart” on TV, I’m reading the hard copy and I’m considering downloading the audiobook—full immersion!
