Staff Snapshots | Michelle Nelson

October 13, 2022

Hometown: Little Rock, Ark.

Role: Senior Legislative Analyst and Committee Staff, Arkansas Legislature

Years of legislative service: Three

“Knowledge is power and understanding, and knowing how to apply knowledge in proper context is just as important.”

Why did you choose to work at the Legislature?

I always had a desire to work closely with the Legislature. While in elementary school, I was chosen to serve as a page in the Arkansas Senate. That experience sparked my interest to learn more about careers in state government. Experiencing the energy taking place in the Senate chamber was very intriguing for me as a young girl. Working on committee staff has afforded me the opportunity to support members in committee work in a team-based and collaborative environment—and still get to walk the halls of the state Capitol.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

My ability to balance multiple tasks with a high degree of organization and my communication skills are invaluable. While most days are even-keeled, others are filled with a myriad of things to do.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by my family and my faith. Having such a large family is my recipe for a very busy and fulfilling life.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

Its natural beauty. My husband and I love spending time outdoors gardening, hunting deer and fishing for bass and crappie, and walking our goldendoodles, Princess and Fancy. I consider myself blessed to live in the “Natural State,” with all its lakes, springs and beautiful walking trails.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I am reading “Angelspeake: How to Talk With Your Angels.” I am listening to cable news channels and watching documentaries on Netflix.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
