Staff Snapshots | Hannah Grunewald

April 22, 2022

Hometown: Minneapolis

Role: Fiscal analyst, Minnesota Senate; Grunewald is a 2021 graduate NCSL’s Legislative Staff Certificate Program.

Years of legislative service: Two and a half

Who inspires her: “As a somewhat newer fiscal analyst, I am inspired by the wisdom, expertise and confidence of my colleagues.”

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

I interned at the Minnesota Capitol while studying public policy at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs, and I discovered how exciting and fascinating policymaking can be at the state level. I genuinely enjoyed the day-to-day, running around to committees, scribbling notes and hearing heartfelt testimony from the public. I learned then that I wanted to be a part of the legislature in some way. Now, working with the Minnesota Senate, I enjoy how each day is different from the last, and I value my role in providing resources to support and inform the policymakers in my state.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

I am a curler! I like to humbly brag that, while I was in high school in Medford, Wisc., my team won the state championships. I’m not necessarily incredibly talented at curling, but I really enjoy the camaraderie and traditions of the sport.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

Whenever I would get anxious about big tests or swim meets growing up, my dad always told me to just try my best, that is all you can do. I carry that phrase with me still. Your “best” can look different depending on the day, your energy, your mental health; but I find comfort in knowing all I have to do is try my best.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

I love the summers in Minnesota and all the outdoor activities you can do across the state! I’m looking forward to paddleboarding again when the weather is nice.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I am currently reading “Parable of the Talents,” by Octavia Butler.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
