Staff Snapshots | Blake Doss

April 23, 2022

Hometown: Vinings, Ga.

Role: Policy analyst, Georgia House of Representatives

NCSL involvement: Staff co-chair for the Communications, Financial Services and Interstate Commerce Committee, known as the CFI Committee

Years of legislative service: Six

The best advice he’s ever received: “Keep good company and good counsel.”

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

My second grade teacher, Mrs. Ulich, sparked within me a love of history and public service that has stayed with me ever since. The deeds of the giants of history and their work to make the world a better place fascinated me. My employment with the House of Representatives was a natural next step after earning my history degree and working in journalism for several years. Working with the Legislature allows me to participate in making 11 million lives better, while improving the legislative process for future generations.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

I am very appreciative of my ability to multitask and pour seemingly endless amounts of energy into multiple complex projects throughout session and the interim.

Who or what inspires you?

In addition to my savior, Jesus Christ, multiple historical figures inspire the way I try to live and work.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

Georgia is a beautiful state with a rich history, which makes it a great place for historians and history buffs to live and work.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I am currently reading a biography on Gen. George C. Marshall and rereading Edmund Morris’ biographical trilogy on Theodore Roosevelt.

What are some of the priorities of your NCSL Standing Committee?

The CFI Committee is responsible for reviewing federal decisions related to banking, insurance, telecommunications and other issues. Among the committee’s priorities for the foreseeable future are ensuring a quick and equitable expansion of broadband access and guaranteeing that our state and local governments are prepared for the cybersecurity challenges that will continue to grow in an increasingly interconnected and online world.
