Staff Snapshots | Angela L. Allen

May 6, 2022

Hometown: Lansing, Mich.

Role: Deputy manager and bill clerk, Michigan Senate

Years of legislative service: 30

NCSL connection: Allen is a 2021 graduate of NCSL’s Legislative Staff Certificate Program.

Who inspires her: “My mother inspires me. She is still very independent, and continues to give me great advice on life. She is instilling old-school values in her great-grandchildren.”

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

My previous employer was laying off workers and making other department cuts. I heard of an open position at the Legislature. I applied, interviewed and was hired approximately two weeks later. God is good; his grace and mercy carried me through.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

I am proud of my leadership skills, and have been the lead on many projects. I was the president of our local school PTA and ran several events for our local school. I am currently the vice president of my neighborhood association. I do it for my community and to show other young people that you can get involved and make a difference.

I am also proud to have learned Michigan’s legislative process and how things work at the county and municipality levels. I am grateful for the knowledge.

What’s the best advice you were ever given?

My mother taught me to work hard, learn a trade that you will enjoy and make a career of it. She also instilled in me to treat people the way that I would want to be treated. Acknowledge your mistakes and learn from them. Do your best and others will see the value in you.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

There are several things I can name, but my favorite is Frankenmuth, the world’s largest Christmas store. They have exclusive ornaments, and you can even have them custom-made to your liking. Please don’t forget the tastiest chicken dinners from Zehnder’s and one of the largest indoor waterparks with a retractable roof. Both are part of Frankenmuth and are fun for everyone.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I have read novels by Terry McMillan, and I am currently listening to contemporary gospel, which soothes the soul and allows my ideas to flow.

When I do watch television, you will find me watching shows like “CSI,” “9-1-1: Lone Star,” “Chicago Fire,” “Criminal Minds” and reality television—“Survivor,” the “Housewives” shows, “Chrisley Knows Best,” to name a few.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
