Why did you choose to work at the legislature?
I was asked into the Legislature as an assistant sergeant-at-arms for the 2012 session. I knew immediately this was where I was supposed to be. My predecessor, who held the position for 53 years, took me under his wing and trained me for seven years. I was named the chief sergeant upon his retirement in 2019. I firmly believe the work done in state legislatures is where the people’s voices are still heard.
What skill or talent are you most proud of?
I have a deep appreciation for the people who come into our Statehouse. Whether they’re elected officials, protestors, lobbyists or tourists, I treat them all with dignity, respect and kindness. That mindset has garnered much respect for my position and has allowed me to uphold the basic rules of decorum, security and public safety for everyone who visits the Capitol.
Who or what inspires you?
My faith in Christ is the single most important and inspirational thing in my life. It is what has molded me into the man I am today, someone I am proud of.
The love and support of my family is also a daily inspiration.
What’s one thing you love about your state?
The people. Sounds cliché, I know, but the people in this state are so kind, always willing to help a stranger. They are rooted in the important things in life.
The lakes are not bad either, LOL.
What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?
I am a huge music buff. Old, new, country to rock, I am always looking for good new—or old—music.
