North Dakota Sen. Doug Larsen, his wife and two children died when the plane he was piloting crashed shortly after takeoff from Moab, Utah, on Monday.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash of the Piper PA-28-140 airplane, which went down after a refueling stop at Canyonlands Regional Airport. An email to North Dakota legislators from Senate Majority Leader David Hogue said Larsen and his family were returning from a visit to relatives in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Larsen, a Republican, served Senate District 34 since 2021. He chaired the Industry and Business Committee and was a member of the Transportation, Education, Taxation and Employee Benefits Programs committees.
Larsen served as a lieutenant colonel in the North Dakota National Guard. He and his wife, Amy, were business owners.
