Job Overview

The Intern Program Coordinator is responsible for the administration of the General Assembly’s Intern Program. The incumbent oversees all aspects of the intern program, including placement of intern applicants presently enrolled in a public or independent college or university. Interns are college students, who work directly for a legislator, committee, or caucus of the Maryland General Assembly during the legislative session. The incumbent will work in the Human Resources Office performing personnel work during the interim and will report to the Human Resources Manager. This is a nonpartisan position, and the incumbent must work within all personnel policies and rules of the Department of Legislative Services.

Responsibilities

  • Update program information, including application, program cover letter, information sheet, and program brochures, as necessary
  • Maintain a database to track students and process stipends
  • Read intern applications and arrange for members and/or staff review to ensure placement of all applicants
  • Handle problems that may arise with students
  • Respond to callers and correspondence from college coordinators, legislators, teachers, parents, and students
  • Provide orientation and training to students • Assist in social media efforts
  • Recommend policies for the program
  • Market the student program through Department’s internet, brochures, and social media
  • Serve as back-up page supervisor in the absence of the Page Program Coordinator
  • Perform additional personnel assignments

Qualifications

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
  • Strong writing skills and fluency as well as strong organizational/task management and communication skills
  • Knowledge of State legislative process, a plus
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality
  • Exceptional telephone and customer service skills
  • Available to work extended hours and be on call nights and weekends during the legislative session
