NCSL Statement on NHTSA Federal Automated Vehicle Policy

NCSL NewsWashington, D.C.—The National Conference of State Legislatures, the bipartisan organization representing the legislatures of our nation’s states, territories, and commonwealths is reviewing recently released federal policy on automated vehicles by the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

NCSL agrees with NHTSA’s determination on the clear distinction between federal and state responsibilities for regulation of highly automated vehicles and looks forward to engaging with NHTSA and the U.S. Department of Transportation as this new technology is further developed. 


NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
