Artificial intelligence—the use of computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as learning and decision-making—has the potential to spur innovation and transform industry and government. Recent breakthroughs in AI show positive impacts like predicting neurodevelopment deficits in infants, detecting fraud in Social Security payments and increasing productivity for customer service jobs. But questions persist about potential bias in automated decisions in education, lending and health care, and the proliferation of deepfakes—false but realistic audio or video clips of people doing or saying things they did not actually do or say.
