Lara
Before joining the Washington Legislature, Mary Ann Lara worked in business, then in social work. “I am a social worker by trade,” she says, “with a professional background in corporate business for 19 years.”
Lara talked with NCSL about her experience in the Legislature and with the Legislative Staff Institutional Essentials program.
What encouraged you to seek a position in the Legislature?
I discovered the power of macro social work. I chose to focus on policy that would make a broader impact on systemic change.
Why did you choose to participate in the Legislative Staff Institutional Essentials program?
It is an excellent beginning to learn about the institution for those that are serious about working in the legislature. I wanted to get more involved, and this was a perfect opportunity to advance my knowledge and connect with staffers across the country.
NCSL’s Legislative Staff Institutional Essentials program provides newer legislative staff with the tools they need to support the legislative institution. It also encourages networking and peer connection with fellow legislative staffers across the country. Read more about the program.
What was the biggest takeaway from the program that you have used in your workplace?
The program reaffirmed the foundational knowledge that I carry each day, all necessary for this work. A few of these topics include understanding my “why,” the importance of building relationships, being a good listener, always be curious, respecting the institution and each other, and prioritizing self-care.”
What other NCSL programs would you recommend for Young and New Professionals members?
I would recommend meeting with your NCSL state liaison and learning about in-state opportunities and events. I really enjoyed the Base Camp as a great introduction to NCSL and exploring the many resources available to us, such as the staff professional development training and seminars.
What has been your most rewarding experience while working for the Legislature?
I have had the opportunity to complete one short session in the House and one long session in the Senate. Both chambers are both incredible, and I have learned so much in the past two years.
If you could tell your younger self one thing about working at the Legislature, what would it be and why?
I would tell my younger self how rewarding it is to learn about the political process, and the true impact it has on us all. Work is not work when it is fulfilling. To find the balance between your passion and your work, that is truly a gift.
Describe your legislative staff experience in five words or less.
Chaos, hyperawareness, mindfulness, authenticity, impact.
What makes your legislature different from others?
The people, the structure, and grounds make our Legislature unique. Washington state is filled with incredible leaders, and the history, location and beauty of our campus is remarkable.
