Staff Snapshots | Adam Elias

April 24, 2022

Hometown: West Springfield, Mass.

Role: Director of State House security, Massachusetts General Court

Years of legislative service: Four and a half

“Integrity is your most important commodity, so be honest to yourself and to those around you.”

Why did you choose to work at the legislature?

Prior to working for the Legislature, I helped to manage security operations at one of Boston’s largest tourist destinations and at the commonwealth’s convention centers. My experience was largely focused on publicly accessible venues that required a necessary balance between security and access. When the Massachusetts State House began its search for a new director of security, I felt confident my experience working in open, diverse and active venues had prepared me for this challenge. I also viewed the role as a unique opportunity to serve my community. I recognize the importance of maintaining a safe environment, especially in today’s political climate, for the Legislature to conduct critical business and for the thousands of visitors who seek to participate in that process.

What skill or talent are you most proud of?

I believe one of the greatest strengths I bring to my role is my ability to collaborate and build consensus. In addition to supporting the Legislature, I also work closely with the executive branch and multiple agencies that share a responsibility in securing the State House. Positive working relationships with these groups have been vital in addressing the security challenges facing state capitols and elected officials in recent years.

Who or what inspires you?

My father has served as my greatest inspiration in both my personal and my professional lives. With little money, no formal education and only a basic understanding of the English language, my father arrived in the United States in the 1970s. He graciously accepted his first job sweeping floors at a manufacturing plant, working every day until he owned a manufacturing company of his own. He instilled a sense of pride in hard work in my siblings and me. He taught us to value a good education, a sense of purpose and, above all else, respect for others. His life lessons have never left me, and those experiences continue to frame my approach to work and my personal life each day.

What’s one thing you love about your state?

Massachusetts has so much to love! From the spectacular mountains of the Berkshires to the pristine beaches of Cape Cod and the rich history found in every corner of the commonwealth, Massachusetts offers something for everyone.

What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?

I’m currently binge-watching “Inventing Anna” and “After Life” on Netflix. I’m also reading “The Gardner Heist: The True Story of the World’s Largest Unsolved Art Theft,” detailing the investigation into the infamous theft at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
