Savannah, Ga.—Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos returns as an officer for the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) as its 50th president after Idaho Speaker Scott Bedke stepped down to assume his new role as lieutenant governor.
Vos, a Republican, previously served as the 47th president of NCSL from 2019 to 2021 and was succeeded by Speaker Scott Saiki (D-Hawaii) in 2021, who in turn was succeeded by Bedke (R-Idaho) at the Legislative Summit in Denver. Vos will serve as NCSL president for the remainder of Bedke’s term, which ends in August at the 2023 Legislative Summit in Indianapolis.
NCSL, the bipartisan organization that serves the nation’s 7,383 state lawmakers and more than 30,000 legislative staff, alternates its leadership annually between the two parties. Vos is the first elected official from Wisconsin to hold this leadership post.
Vos has served as the 75th speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly since 2013, making him the longest-serving GOP speaker in Wisconsin history. In the preceding years, he served consecutively in the Wisconsin State Assembly beginning in 2004.
During his time as speaker, the legislature approved one of the largest tax cuts in Wisconsin history and became the nation’s 25th right-to-work state. Vos is proud of the bipartisan work in the Assembly, where more than 90% of the bills passed receive bipartisan support. His speaker's task forces have developed important legislation on topics including mental health, rural schools, Alzheimer's and dementia, urban education, water quality, suicide prevention and foster care.
Vos lives in Rochester, Wis., with his wife, Michelle, where he operates a variety of small businesses in southeastern Wisconsin.
