Staff Snapshots | Meggan Foesch

October 2, 2019

Meggan Foesch is the business manager for the Wisconsin Senate.

What’s your specific role in the Legislature?

I am responsible for the accounting functions, which include oversight of senate office accounts and expenses along with the procurement process. I am responsible for processing per diem and travel for senators and staff. I am also responsible for the Senate phone system, landlines, and cellphones. I work on State Capitol, and Executive Residence Board projects and I also do event planning as well as provide general support to the chief clerk.

Why did you choose to work at the Legislature?

When I was 19 years old, I came to the Capitol on a Saturday with my parents for a tour. I loved the building so much and said one day I'll work in this building. At 20, I found myself without a job just after receiving my associate degree in pharmaceutical technician. There was an ad in the paper for an administrative assistant for the Legislative Technology Services Bureau. I applied, went in for an interview, and got the job that very same day. I knew nothing about politics! I started working as the administrative assistant and soon became the inventory and purchasing manager. After working there for seven years, Senate Chief Clerk Rob Marchant contacted me to interview for the business manager position coming available soon, and here I am 12 years later. I now couldn't imagine myself working anywhere else.

What do you find most enjoyable and/or rewarding about your job?

I love working with the staff. When I’m able to help them with a situation where they have a deadline for a senator, and I can offer my assistance to get the job done. I find that the most rewarding.

What work are you proud of?

I am very proud of the work I did on implementing our reimbursement website. This allows staff and legislators to electronically enter, submit and track travel, per diem and office account reimbursement transactions. We have used this now for three years. Recently we did an update, and now staff and legislators can also use this site to enter and track authorizations to travel and incur expenses.

When you are not working, what might we find you doing?

My husband and I love to travel, go to Packer and Brewer games and we recently started going to the different wineries throughout Wisconsin. We have four kids and enjoy spending our time with them.

Any insights for your peers? Any shoutouts to colleagues or legislators you’ve worked with?

I would like to give a shoutout to Sarah Burhop. She has worked for the Legislature for over 30 years and will be retiring next July. She plays a crucial role in our office and keeps our staff well organized and always willing to give help where needed. She will be genuinely missed by everyone in the Senate!
