Hometown: Farmington Hills, Mich.
Role: Legislative analyst, Louisiana House Committee on Education
Years of legislative service: Seven
What inspires her: “Compromise among legislators. When the members come together for the good of the people of the state.”
Why did you choose to work at the legislature?
Public service has always been more interesting to me than working in the private sector. My legislative service began at the House research library while I was earning my library science master’s degree. From the start, I found the environment exciting, partially because it was different from any other work I’d done before. I enjoy the pace of session and my work is meaningful and rewarding.
What skill or talent are you most proud of?
As nonpartisan staff, I take pride in earning the trust of every member—trust in the work I do and in my abilities. It’s important to me, and to advancing the mission of House Legislative Services, to treat every legislator the same regardless of party, leadership position, years served, vote record, etc.
What’s the best advice you were ever given?
“Keep it moving.” You’ll come across challenges, puzzles and obstacles as a legislative staffer. None of them affect the fundamentals of our jobs. Staying grounded in what you offer members, their aides, and constituents helps you “move” from one task to the next, no matter what comes up along the way.
What’s one thing you love about your state?
People don’t take celebrations lightly here. COVID notwithstanding, festivals, live music, good food and drinks are easy to come by. Although I have an appreciation for nights in, I also like letting the good times roll.
What are you currently reading/listening to/watching?
Reading: My mom and I often have similar taste in books so per her recommendation, I’m reading “The Godmothers,” by Camille Aubray.
Listening to: “Gold-Diggers Sound,” Leon Bridges’ new album.
Watching: My husband and I are making our way through all the Harry Potter movies.
