Job Overview

The associate director for digital communications serves as the chief digital and new media strategist for the Assembly Democratic Office. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the chosen candidate will develop and implement a strategy that embraces digital media as a tool that allows the caucus to speak directly to constituents and demonstrate leadership on critical issues like affordability for New Jersey families, gun violence prevention, economic development, and pandemic recovery efforts. The associate director will head a key component of the office’s multi-tiered communications strategy and manage a team that oversees the caucus’ social media channels, including Facebook and Twitter. The associate director will also oversee videographers who can shoot and produce content. The team’s total size will be three to four individuals. In addition, the associate director will work with other members of the communications team in amplifying the caucus’ message by working with and providing support to outside stakeholders partnering on key legislative priorities. And the associate director will play a key role in planning and executing traditional media events, including press conferences, tours and the placement of op-eds, with an eye toward maximizing digital visibility.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a digital strategy that supports the office’s communications goals and amplifies its messages.
  • Oversee a team that develops digital content, as well as video, designed to communicate directly with constituents through social media channels, including Facebook and Twitter.
  • Providing digital strategy to maximize the digital potential of traditional earned media events, like press conferences, tours and the placement of op-eds.
  • Work with legislative staff to highlight the work of individual members, as well as the Speaker.
  • Other duties as directed by the Communications Director.

The position works closely with policy staff in the office to communicate effectively and efficiently about the agenda of the leadership team, as well as with outreach staff to ensure that constituents are well informed about our members’ initiatives.

The position will also work closely with other caucus members and their staff as well as the Senior Leadership within the Majority Office. The position is a full-time, in-person position based in the New Jersey Statehouse, with significant in-state travel required.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years working in communications with increasingly responsible experience in dealing with media, public policy, government relations, or other related experience.
  • Strong writing skills, communication skills and a demonstrated ability to translate policy goals into language that members of the public can understand are required. Significant prior video and digital media experience is required.
