State Overview: Wyoming

Prior authorization requirements are up to the discretion of the state Medicaid program or insurance company.

Diagnostic ability is outlined in statute. 

Licensed professional counselors may treat, diagnose, test, assess or counsel individuals or groups to alleviate mental disorders, understand unconscious or conscious motivation, resolve emotional relationships or attitudinal conflicts, or modify behaviors that interfere with effective emotional, social or intellectual functioning. Wyo. Stat. §33-38-102(a)(viii)

Full independent practice and prescriptive authority.

APRNs (including CNMs) are recognized and licensed by the State Board of Nursing. Wyo. Stat. §33-21-120

APRNs (including CNMs) are authorized to prescribe prescription drugs and Schedules II-V controlled substances. Wyo. Stat. §33-21-120(a)(i)(A)

Full independent practice and prescriptive authority.

APRNs (including NPs) are recognized and licensed by the State Board of Nursing. Wyo. Stat. §33-21-120

APRNs (including NPs) are authorized to prescribe prescription drugs and Schedules II-V controlled substances. Wyo. Stat. §33-21-120(a)(i)(A)

NPs are authorized to sign POLST forms as a patient's primary health care provider. Wyo. Stat. §35-22-504

NPs are recognized in state policy as primary care providers. Primary care means care provided by a family practice physician, pediatrician, internist, obstetrician or an NP or PA in a similar practice. Wyo. Stat. §26-1-104

Full independent practice and prescriptive authority.

Wyoming opted out of the CRNA federal supervision requirement for critical access hospitals and rural hospitals with 25 or fewer licensed beds in 2023. 

APRNs, including CRNAs, are subject at all times to the standards and scope of practice established by national professional organizations and/or accrediting agencies representing the various core, role and population focus areas for APRNs. CRNAs have full practice authority under the nurse practice act . Wyo. Stat. §33-21-120

Optometrists may perform all procedures included in their full scope of practice, including laser surgery. Wyo. Stat. §33-23-101

Optometrists may administer any therapeutic pharmaceutical agent. Wyo. Stat. §33-23-101

Optometrists may prescribe Schedule III-V controlled substances and Schedule II controlled substances containing hydrocodone combinations. Wyo. Stat. §33-23-102

A public health dental hygienist may provide prophylaxis, fluoride varnishes, oral health education, and dental screenings in certain facilities. The dental hygienist must have a collaborative agreement with a dentist. Wyo. Admin. Code §7-5(c)

Dental therapists are not recognized in state policy as an oral health provider.

Wyoming has not enacted legislation allowing pharmacists to administer the COVID-19 vaccine. However, the federal PREP Act allowed pharmacists to administer the COVID-19 vaccine through the duration of the public health emergency.

Wyoming does not allow pharmacists to modify prescriptions.

Wyoming does not allow pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraceptives.

Wyoming does not allow pharmacists to prescribe tobacco cessation aids.

Supervision or collaboration not required for practice or prescriptive authority.

A PA may collaborate with or refer to the appropriate member of a healthcare team as indicated by the condition of the patient and the education, experience and competence of the PA and the current standard of care. The degree of collaboration shall be determined at the practice level, which may include decisions made by the employer, group, hospital service or the credentialing and privileging systems. Wyo. Stat. § 33-26-502(b)

A PA may prescribe schedule II, III, IV or V drugs. Wyo. Stat. § 33-26-510(c)

Wyoming does not currently have any provisions related to the number of PAs a physician can supervise or collaborate with.

Wyoming does not currently have any provisions related to chart review or chart co-signatures.

Statue allows adaptable proximity.
