States have authority to regulate the number of physician assistants (PAs) that a physician or other qualified health care professional may supervise in statute. Some states limit the number of PAs a physician may supervise in statute. Further, some states may include other mid-level health care providers, such as advanced practice registered nurses, within the number limit. Other states may not limit the number of PAs a physician or other qualified provider may supervise.
