Pharmacists are authorized to administer vaccines in all 50 states but the type of vaccine and the patient age varies by state.
Specific to the COVID-19 vaccines, the federal Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness Act gives the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary the authority to issue declarations. One specific declaration authorized pharmacists in all 50 states and D.C. to administer COVID-19 vaccines for the duration of the public health emergency. Some states have also authorized pharmacists to administer the COVID-19 vaccine through executive order, however, those are not reflected in the map.
The map indicates the states with laws specifically allowing pharmacists to administer the COVID-19 vaccine throughout the public health emergency. NOTE: The federal PHE for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service Act, expired at the end of the day on May 11, 2023.
