When temperatures soar, it’s time for sprinklers, swimming pools and trips to the closest body of water. For most Americans, that can mean a long drive. Not so in Michigan, the nation’s wettest state, where residents are never more than six miles from a body of water, thanks to 52,000 streams, nearly 11,000 inland lakes and four of the five Great Lakes. New Mexico is the driest state at 0.2%, and the other states rounding out the bottom 10 are all west of the Mississippi River—except one.
