Millions of Americans give back to their communities. Volunteers working with community organizations contributed nearly 5 billion hours of service nationally between September 2022 and 2023, according to AmeriCorps’ most recent volunteering survey. That’s an increase of 5% over 2021. The value of that gift of time: $167.2 billion. Utah residents volunteer at the highest rate—46.6%— and Vermont claims second with 40.5% of residents formally volunteering at an organization. The U.S. Census Bureau also tracks informal volunteering, where someone helps another directly, such as running errands for a neighbor, watching each other’s children or in some way lending a hand, and found that nearly 54% of Americans report offering that kind of help.
