When soldiers came home from World War II, Congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt supported their education, training, health care and housing through the 1944 Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, more commonly called the GI Bill of Rights. Today’s Map Monday looks at the impact of the home loan program, which provides low interest mortgage loans, no down payment or private mortgage insurance required. Since its inception, the program has provided more than 28 million loans to veterans. Each year, hundreds of thousands of veterans obtain VA home loans in every state and some territories. In fiscal year 2023, the range was 21 loans in the U.S. Virgin Islands to nearly 44,000 in Texas, for a total of 400,692 loans at just over $144 billion.
