Iowa has the nation’s highest income from a single agricultural commodity: Its corn crop generated $15.4 million in 2022. In contrast, Alaska’s top category—miscellaneous crops—generated the lowest, $16,800. Now, if salmon counted as an ag commodity, Alaska would blow the other states out of the water, with a whopping $720 million in sales in 2022. Guess which is the only state where potatoes are the top crop? You might be surprised. And overall, it’s not corn or cattle but chickens—known as broilers—that top the list in most states.
