The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children program, known as Sun Bucks, represents America’s successful federal-state partnership model to feed kids during the summer, a program that evolved from the 1939 Food Stamp program. The Sun Bucks program automatically enrolls children whose families receive food assistance or Medicaid benefits, as well as those attending schools with free or reduced-price meal programs. This year, 37 states, Washington, D.C., all territories and several tribal nations will deliver Summer EBT benefits, ensuring low-income households automatically $40 a month in grocery assistance for each child during summer months when school meals end; rates are slightly higher where food costs more. While 12 states have opted out of Sun Bucks, Sun Meals are available at participating schools, parks and other locations across the U.S. throughout the summer break.
