In a historic display of civic engagement, the 2020 U.S. presidential election saw a record-breaking voter turnout. An estimated 159 million Americans cast their ballots, marking the highest participation rate in over a century. Overall, 66.7% of all eligible and registered voters cast a ballot 2020 compared to 54.8% of voters who showed up in 2016. Registration is up nationally. Minnesota had the highest turnout rate at 80%. Vote.org reported that on National Voter Registration Day September 16, more than 150,000 people registered, the highest number the group has registered on that day. And Vote.org says about 80 percent of the people who register through their site do cast ballots.
