The Shirley Plantation in Virginia has been in the same family since 1613, making it the oldest business in the country. Some New England farms also were established in the 1600s, and the list of these long-standing businesses also includes taverns and restaurants, inns and resorts established in the 1700s and 1800s. Jewelers, grocery stores and law firms make the list, as do two funeral homes. In three states—Indiana, North Dakota and Utah—the oldest businesses are newspapers.
