About 70% of U.S. adults describe themselves as spiritual in some way, with more than 20% saying they are spiritual but not religious. Still, in a recent poll, about 3 in 4 Americans said they identify with a specific religious faith. The Southern states are the nation’s most religious, while those in the Northeast and Northwest are the among the least pious, according to The Pew Research Center. The percentage for each state in the map below indicates the number of adults who are “highly religious,” based on Pew’s index of the number of residents who say religion is very important in their lives; who attend worship services at least weekly; who pray daily; and who say they believe in God with absolute certainty.
