The 9.2 million horses in the United States can be found in every state, doing everything from farm work to rodeos, trail riding to show jumping and, of course, racing. With the 150th anniversary of the Kentucky Derby falling on the first Saturday in May, it begs the question: How many horses could possibly qualify for the Derby, which is limited to 3-year-old thoroughbreds? About 20,000 thoroughbreds are born each year, but only about 350 might end up on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby,” a series of challenging races in the U.S., Europe, Japan and United Arab Emirates where horses score points to qualify. By May 4, only the 20 fastest will have earned a spot at the starting gate at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.
