More than 1.2 million school-age children live in unstable housing situations, which can result in academic difficulties. But many school officials don’t fully understand the scope of the problem in their districts . The extensive database created by the advocacy group Schoolhouse Connection shows the numbers in each school district or legislative district.
Barbara Duffield, Schoolhouse Connection’s executive director, says more than half of homeless students face chronic absenteeism, and they are significantly less likely to graduate from high school.
Today’s Map Monday shows the total number of students without housing in each state and the share of the overall student population they represent. NCSL offers resources for state legislatures about youth and young adult homelessness.
