Spring is the biggest time of year for tornadoes, but they can turn up in any month. U.S. Air Force meteorologists identified “Tornado Alley” in 1952, a swath that included Texas and Oklahoma. More recently, a “Dixie Alley” has developed, with states such as Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama seeing more frequent twisters. And every state has had tornadoes, though in this map of both major and minor storms of 2023, three states and Washington, D.C., had none. The nation averages more than 1,200 tornadoes a year.
