Like most every sector, arts and culture took deep hits during the pandemic as venues closed and performers and fans stayed home. But the sector also bounced back after the pandemic more quickly than many did. Observers say it was a sign of how much people value it and longed to connect to it again. Today’s map tracks how much the arts and culture generate toward states’ GDP numbers and how many jobs the sector creates. In most states, jobs in this field make up 2%-3% of all jobs, though museum-saturated Washington, D.C., tops the list at 7.3% in arts and culture. Washington state bucked the trend, too, with 5.2% arts and culture jobs, and New York was third with 4.9%.
