Traffic crashes and fatalities are near all-time highs, as 42,939 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those, 13,384 were killed in alcohol-impaired traffic crashes, a 14% increase from 2020. The state where the highest percentage of traffic deaths involved alcohol was Montana (44%), while Mississippi had the lowest percentage (20%) of alcohol related deaths.
