2012 Equal Pay Legislation

Sixteen states introduced bills during the 2012 legislative session. Four measures were enacted, although two of the four were subsequently vetoed.
 
California passed a resolution calling on Congress to adopt the Paycheck Fairness Act. (AJR 47)
 
Illinois adopted a provision that officers or agents of a corporation who willfully and knowingly permit such employer to evade a final judgment awarded under the state’s Equal Pay Act shall be liable as employers. (SB 2847)
 
Louisiana passed an act creating an Equal Pay Task Force but the measure was vetoed by the Governor as the legislation did not include a funding source. (SB 577)
 
New Jersey passed a law prohibiting employers from retaliating against current or former employees who share information about salary or other job details as part of an investigation into employment discrimination; however, the law was vetoed by the Governor on the grounds that it was inconsistent with related laws. (AB 2648)
