Italy Governor of Piedmontese Meets with NCSL DC Staff
February 1, 2011
On Tuesday, February 1st, NCSL was honored to meet with the Honorable Roberto Cota, Governor of the Italian region of Piedmont, to discuss federalism in the United States and Italy, current issues of state and regional concern, and the potential of NCSL’s future relationship with the Piedmont region.
Governor Cota was particularly interested in interstate projects and compacts, especially the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He stated that as the cities of Turin and Milan grow into Italy’s first bi-regional urban area, the example of the Port Authority should be used as a reference as the infrastructure management in Turin-Milan grows and develops.
During the meeting, similar challenges facing U.S. states and Piedmont were discussed, including immigration, building infrastructure, unemployment, and the industrial sector. The meeting was concluded with mutual expressions of interest in pursuing increased collaboration between NCSL and Piedmont.
