NCSL Welcomes Fellows

For the first time, NCSL’s Early Childhood Fellows, Child Welfare Fellows and Youth Homelessness Fellows will meet together. Approximately 70 legislators and legislative staff will convene June 27-29 in Seattle to kick-off cohort-based policy fellowships that recognize the overlapping aspects of the three policy areas.

States Step in as End of Free School Meal Waivers Looms

Amid increasing food prices, free school meal waivers are expected to end Sept. 30. Some state legislatures have increased students’ access to nutritious meals by expanding free school meal programs, prohibiting penalties for outstanding school lunch debt and establishing farm-to-school programs.

Paris Hilton Lends Voice to Support Kids in Foster Facilities

Legislators are crossing party lines to protect children and youth in institutional foster care settings. Alongside national advocates, Sixto Cancel and Paris Hilton, Sen. Gelser-Blouin (D-OR) and Sen. McKell (R-UT), are leading reform efforts in their states and pushing for federal minimum standards.
