Lottery Payouts and State Revenue, 2010
State Lotteries sold $53 billion in tickets in 2010 (the most recent data available), with a third--almost $18 billion--of that available for use by the states. States spent a total of $3 billion on administration costs to run the lottery. The remainder of ticket sales income is paid out in prizes, which amounts to almost $33 billion.
