The materials include: Spent Fuel (SF), High-Level Radioactive Waste (HLW), Transuranic Waste (TW) and Highway Route-Controlled Quantities of Radioactive Materials (HRCQ).

Permit required for all hazmat. Annual fee based on number of vehicles, ranging from $10 to $400; single trip $25.

Georgia

Commissioner of Public Safety

Permit required for all radioactive materials shipments. $100 annual or fee for issuance of single-trip shall be established by commissioner. Commissioner may charge a fee for issuance of permit. Fee for annual trip permit shall not be more than $100.

Idaho

Idaho Department of Transportation

Vehicle registration endorsement fee required for all shipments of hazmat:

  • Annual vehicle registration fee for transportation of hazmat is $10.

Illinois

Illinois Emergency Management Agency

No permit required. For shipments of SF, HLW, TRUW, HRCQ fee paid by shipper:

  • $2,500/truck shipment. Truck shipments charged $25/truck/mile for each mile over 250.
  • $4,500/cask for rail shipments, $3,000 for each additional rail cask.

Indiana

Indiana Emergency Management Agency

For HLW shipment, shipper must submit a notice and transportation fee.

  • For truck shipment, $2,500/truck
  • For each rail shipment, $4,500 for first cask and $3,000 for second and additional casks.

Iowa

Iowa Department of Public Health

Transporters of SF, HLW, TRUW, HRCQ pay the following fees:

  • $1,800/highway cask for each truck shipment; $20/mile for each single cask truck shipment over 250 miles traveled.
  • $1,300 for first rail cask, $125 for each additional cask.

Maine

Maine Turnpike Authority

Permits are required for the transporation of radioactive material:

  • Permits for single trip will be issued no later than 3 days prior to shipment on turnpike.

  • Permit fee of $10 for single trip.

Missouri Department of Natural Resources The following fees apply to HLW, TRUW, or SF shipped through or within the state:
  • $1,800 for each cask transported through or within state via truck. $25 per mile over 200 miles traveled.
  • $1,300 for first cask, $125 for each additional cask/rail shipment.

Department of Transportation

The following fees apply to HLW and TRUW shipped through the state:
  • $2,500 for each cask designed for transport by truck
  • $4,500 for the first cask designed for transport by rail, and $3,000 for each additional cask

Fee of $3,100/cask for transportation of HLW or TRUW shipped by any means.

Nevada

Nevada Highway Patrol

Registration and permit required for all hazmat highway transportation:

  •  $125 registration fee.
  • $500 permit review fee once every three years.
  •  $125 vehicle fee.
  • Fee to cover administrative expenses.
  • Registration fee based on mileage traveled in state, power units used and load size.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire Department of Safety

Permit required for transportation of all HLW. Single-trip permit fees follow:

  • $2,500/application for administrative costs.
  • $2,000/application for training costs.
  • State police detail rate prior to shipment /hour /officer for inspection and escorting shipment.

Annual permit, same fees apply except administrative fee is charged only once.

New Jersey

Department of Environmental Protection

"Certificate of handling" required for radioactive materials transport. Fee not specified.

Fees apply to registration and permitting for hazmat transportation by motor carrier. These fees are set by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

Oregon Department of Energy

Permit required for radioactive materials shipments by motor carrier:

  • $70/shipment placarded.
  • $100 fee/shipment traveling under temporary permit.
  • For placarded shipments of well-logging material, radiographic material and radiopharmaceuticals, the carrier shall submit an annual fee of $500 or $70 per shipment, whichever is less.

  • $500/vehicle, $1,000/rail or barge shipment to Department of Environmental Protection.
  • $2,500/vehicle, $4,500/rail or barge shipment, that requires an escort, to Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

South Carolina

South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control

Three fee levels for radioactive waste transportation permit:

  • $2,500 for disposal, storage or processing within state of over 75 cu. ft. of radioactive waste/year.
  • $300 for disposal, storage or processing within state of under 75 cu. ft. of radioactive waste/year.
  • $100 annual fee for transportation into or within state.

Tennessee

Notification of SF shipment required along with the following fees:

  • $1,000 assessed/cask for truck shipments.
  • $2,000 per cask for rail shipments.

Utah

Utah Department of Transportation

"Approval" required for transport of radioactive waste by all modes, but the Department of Transportation does not currently assess a fee.

West Virginia

West Virginia Public Service Commission

Registration and permit required for all hazmat transportation. Fees established by rulemaking and should be apportioned:

  • By percentage of registrants activity in the state.
  • Percentage of registrant’s business related to hazardous materials.
  • Number of motor vehicles operated by registrant.
  • The general processing fee and the vehicle fee for processing and registration shall not exceed $50.
