Health Impact Assessments

A health impact assessment (HIA) is a tool that policymakers can use to gauge the potential health impacts of a policy or project. Just as environmental impact statements are used to measure potential ecological harms, health impact assessments can be used to understand the potential health effects of a policy or project before it is implemented. HIAs allow state lawmakers to tailor policies in order to avoid or mitigate negative health impacts. HIAs can be used in a wide-variety of policy areas, from transportation projects to pollution prevention to new energy facility siting decisions.
