Overview
These maps show party control by legislative district for state Senates and lower chambers—Houses or Assemblies—following the Nov. 8, 2016, election. The maps were produced by Quorum, a Washington, D.C.-based firm that offers bill tracking and political information using data analytics, in partnership with the National Conference of State Legislatures. Note that there are 98 partisan chambers because Nebraska has a unicameral, nonpartisan Legislature.
Before the Nov. 8 election, of the 7,383 state legislators, 4,120 were Republicans and 3,170 were Democrats. The remaining 93 seats were made up of the 49 nonpartisan legislators in Nebraska; 30 seats held by third party members; and 14 vacant seats. Republicans held 1,090 seats in the Senate chambers and Democrats held 827 seats. Republicans held 3,029 seats in the lower chambers and Democrats held 2,343.
Following the election, as the maps below reflect, there were 4,169 Republican state legislators and 3,131 Democratic state legislators. Nebraska has 49 nonpartisan legislators, 17 legislators are third party, and 17 seats are yet to be decided. Republicans held 1,124 seats in Senate chambers and Democrats held 792 seats. Republicans held 3,045 seats in the lower chambers and Democrats held 2,339.
The maps below show Republican and Democratically held districts. Areas marked in gray show districts held by third party state legislators, vacancies yet to be filled, and Nebraska's nonpartisan Legislature.
