NCSL School Leadership Initiative
Since 2000, NCSL has been privileged to partner with The Wallace Foundation to engage state policymakers in a national education leadership initiative. NCSL works collaboratively with a National Consortium of organizations, including the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), the National Governors Association (NGA) and the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), to provide research, best practices and technical assistance to states and policymakers working to strengthen policies to recruit, prepare and support high-quality school leaders.
The Wallace Foundation supports selected states, and districts within those states, to help the field understand and effectively respond to key unanswered challenges: defining the essential elements of leadership, greatly improving the training of principals and superintendents, and providing leaders with the policies, incentives and job conditions they need to raise student achievement on a wide scale.
Current states active in this project include: Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Individual district sites include: Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Eugene, Oregon; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Jefferson County, Kentucky; Springfield, Illinois; Springfield, Massachusetts; St. Louis, Missouri; and Providence, Rhode Island
NCSL keeps policymakers informed of what is happening with state leadership systems by gathering, analyzing and disseminating information about current and emerging issues, trends and innovations in state educational leadership policy. With generous support from The Wallace Foundation, NCSL has been able to work closely with a network of districts and states, provide targeted technical assistance to states and share the latest research and best practices through publications and meeting sessions.
