LESN 2010 Recognition Award
The LESN Steering Committee is honored to recognize Dr. Helen James, Senior Legislative Attorney, Office of Legal Services, Tennessee General Assembly, as this year’s LESN Recognition Award recipient. Helen worked at the General Assembly for 12 years and has served as the staff attorney for both the House and Senate Education Committees, the K-12 Subcommittee, the Higher Education Subcommittee and the Joint Oversight Committee on Education since 2003. She has also served as a “second chair” attorney to the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee and now the House Finance, Ways and Means Committee. In her finest hour, Helen handled the extensive legal work for the General Assembly during the special session on education. Her efforts helped the State of Tennessee make major changes in education policy in numerous areas, leading to an ambitious and innovative Race to the Top proposal that proved to be a winner, much like Helen James. Helen is recognized by her colleagues for her professionalism, competence, and integrity in service to the General Assembly and LESN. A full profile on Helen will be forthcoming.
