Agriculture Task Force | 2017 Spring Meeting


New Orleans skyline at night.NCSL's Agriculture Task Force held its Spring Meeting in New Orleans on June 8-10, 2017. The task force helps develop NCSL policy options to address critical agriculture and rural development issues facing the states and serves as a conduit for state legislative communication with the Federal government. 

The meeting bought together task force members and agriculture-focused legislators to discuss pressing state-federal agriculture policy issues. Participants made site visits along the Mississippi River including one of ADM’s grain elevators and the Port of New Orleans.

ADM Destrehan Grain Elevator Tour & Shipyard

Just west of New Orleans, participants had the opportunity to be briefed on the size of the facilities’ operation, and witness a grain elevator in operation. The group then toured ADM’s shipyard before boarding a crewboat to head downriver to the Port of New Orleans.

The group received an up-close view and detailed explanation of the ports uptown shipping facilities and downtown cruise terminal to understand the port and river’s value to the state and local economy and international trade.

Dinner in the French Quarter

Louisiana’s Department of Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, one of the few elected Agriculture Commissioners in the country and a former state representative, kicked off the dinner with a few remarks. Dr. Strain, is also currently serving as President of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.
