The U.S. Census Bureau is the nation’s provider of trustworthy, consistent data. It produces dozens of data products, with the decennial census as the marquee release, and the American Community Survey, an annual sampling, providing far more detail about social, economic, demographic and housing trends. How can policymakers engage with these data troves? NCSL hosted a webinar series in 2022 and 2023 addressing accuracy, quality and concerns—plus ways that states can lend assistance to the bureau either to assure that the data is as accurate as possible, or to work with the data for analysis and beyond.
