State, Local Government Associations Condemn Potential Armed Protests and Acts of Violence Around Country

WASHINGTON—The National Governors Association, Council of State Governments, National Conference of State Legislatures, National Association of Counties, National League of Cities, U.S. Conference of Mayors and International City/County Management Association released the following statement:

“The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris next week marks the transfer of power between administrations, a hallmark of the world’s most enduring democracy. The nation’s state and local leaders call for a peaceful transition and condemn any acts of violence, both in Washington and in state capitals, city and county halls and other centers of government, as detrimental to our shared values as Americans. Our groups representing state and local governments vehemently condemn any potential violence on our institutions that are the cornerstones of our democracy.”

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues and is an effective and respected advocate for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
