San Antonian Bobby Henline set to Address National Conference

From Pain to Laughter:Trading in War for a Comedy Club

One soldier uses humor to impact state lawmakers and help heal wounds.

The events of April 7, 2007, are foggy, but Staff Sergeant Bobby Henline remembers taking over the lead vehicle on a road in Iraq to keep a newly injured soldier from harm. He had just started his third tour of duty when he was hit by an IED-- improvised explosive device–and gravely wounded. All of the other soldiers with him that day died.

Henline suffered burns over half of his body and later, the loss of his left arm. During his recovery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, a therapist suggested he try laughter and comedy to heal. Henline now takes his story, personality and sense of humor on stage and uses laughter to unite everyone in a common understanding that survival is in all of us.

Henline will be appearing at the National Conference of State Legislatures 37th annual Legislative Summit in San Antonio Aug. 8–11. He will be an opening act at the general session on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 9 a.m. Hundreds of state legislators, many of whom focus on veterans issues in their home state, will be on hand in the Lila Cockrell Ballroom of the San Antonio Convention Center.

In conjunction with Henline’s appearance, NCSL is asking delegates to donate $10 to  benefit Operation Interdependence, a San Antonio organization that puts together care packages and letters for troops overseas. NCSL will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to OI, which has collected and donated more than one million pounds of goods to our troops. In addition, attendees at NCSL’s Legislative Summit will also have the opportunity to write letters to men and women currently serving in the military or veterans.

Members of the media are welcome to attend Henline’s opening comedy routine. Journalists will need to obtain media credentials in the press room, Room 208, of the convention center.
